It *might* be possible to install hacked firmware into a drive or replace the controller board with a hacked firmware controller board that will allow the spare sectors that are used to remap failing sectors to be read directly and any failed sectors that were mapped out and replaced by a spare sector to make the drive apear flawless and it's possible the faulty mapped out sector could contain a fragment of data that might be important. Forensic examination of a drive usally happens on a drives image of the entire surface not to recover previously overwritten data because with current hard drives it is well understood to be impossible, with any current technology, but to find file fragments of previously deleted data and if possible piecing the fragments back together to try and get evidence or clues. There is no published credible claim that anyone has ever recovered previously overwritten data using any known or hypothetical equipment including any eisoteric clean room lab. Tranmontane, There is no such program as a forensic program to recover data from a maliciously overwritten drive (assuming the entire drive surface was overwritten at least once. I just wish some maker would offer a "forensic" type recovery programme, for hard disks that someone has purposely sabotaged by over-writing, though. This programme will just be added to my "arsenal" of programmes to try - when I get around to it. Have a couple of HDDs I would like to try it on, but I as am on holiday, I can't really say. Although yes, it could be Win10 that is at fault - it often is with other things.Īs regards the actual programme, does it work well? I am sorry I can't say: I I don't know what GOTD have been doing, but it surely can't be my laptop "deciding" not to cooperate. It always used to be this way with every GOTD programme, but in the last few months it has more often been as described above - so that I have had to try using a less-convenient Gmail account rather than my preferred Hotmail account. It downloaded in "the usual way", whereupon my Windows 10 opened it, presenting the Notes and the actual installation file, from which I was easily able to install with the provided licence number. Many times I am led to a page that gives two options - "Download link" or "Send a download link to your email adddress" - neither of which usually work, often. At least it is a simple install operation.
